From harvesting the tree sap from which the lacquer is made to sanding and shaping the wooden base, every step of the process is carried out entirely by hand. Skilled lacquerware artisans apply Caspari designs to the wood, add gold leaf, silver leaf, and hand-painted details if desired, and then finish each piece with multiple layers of high-gloss lacquer. These are carefully applied to protect and seal the surface, giving it a beautiful sheen.
